Better Thinking
Cognitive Steering
It’s pretty much what it sounds like. Cognition is thinking. So imagine you have a steering wheel for your thoughts. Turns out that you do. One of the challenges is that it doesn’t require a license to operate this cognitive vehicle, so our training may be limited and inadequate. Just like a car’s steering wheel is turned to help passengers reach a destination, so too are your thoughts taking you toward a destination. Do you know where that is? Do you know where you want it to be? This project focuses on providing practical ideas to help steer thinking toward your desired destination.

Context Dependent Humor
Context Dependent Humor is exactly what is sounds like. Humorous events and circumstances which depend upon a given context. The most common phrase heard when this occurs is “well…you had to be there.” Also known as Inside Jokes, this type of humor may actually serve a strong purpose in community-building in the workplace. The goal of this project is to research and understand the nature, benefits, limitations, and drawbacks inherent in Context Dependent Humor. For more information or to contribute to the project, email insidejokes@mirthworks.org.

Meme Analysis
“Wait…you’re telling me that memes are more than just something my friends send me in a text!?” You bet they are! In many ways, memes represent a cultural currency to trade with others. They can often provide commentary on current social challenges, relief from the rigors of the workplace, thought-provoking insights, and much more. This project is contributing a chapter in a broader publication aimed at general audiences interested in exploring the ways in which memes influence our thoughts and actions.
CURRENT STATUS: Completed, in-press (estimated publication mid-2025)
